Steele and your Google account

Connecting Google is optional. School updates depend on the information available through your connected school accounts.

If you choose to connect, Steele asks only for the access needed for the feature you are using:

  • Classroom classes (classroom.courses.readonly)

    Steele lists the student's enrolled classes so deadlines can be attributed to a class. No narrower Classroom courses scope exists.

  • Classroom coursework (classroom.coursework.me.readonly)

    The deadline tracker reads this student's own assignments and due dates. Steele deliberately uses the .me variant so it never sees other students' work, and the read-only variant so it cannot submit or change work.

  • Classroom submissions (classroom.student-submissions.me.readonly)

    Steele reads this student's own submission state and grades so it reports what is actually outstanding. This is already the narrowest variant available.

  • Calendar events read (calendar.events.readonly)

    Today view and the daily brief render the student's real schedule via Calendar events.list. This is the narrowest Calendar scope that can read events, and it cannot create, change, or delete anything.

These four scopes cover the read-only school connection. Steele does not ask for Gmail, Drive, or Google Docs access. Accounts connected before September 10, 2026 may still hold a wider grant from the older version of this list, including Gmail; Steele no longer requests it, and you can remove it at the Google link below or by disconnecting Google in your dashboard.

Optional parent calendar sync (calendar.app.created)

When a parent chooses Google sync in Calendar settings, Steele creates a separate Steele Family calendar in the parent’s Google account and creates, updates, or removes its mirrored school events. This scope is limited to calendars Steele creates and does not allow editing the child’s school calendar.

Alternatively, you can create a private calendar subscription link in Settings. Anyone with the link can read the selected school schedule. You can replace or revoke the link; calendar apps may retain events already downloaded.

Limited Use

Steele Labs LLC's use and transfer to any other app of information received from Google APIs will adhere to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.

In practice that means Steele uses the Google data listed above only to provide and improve the features listed above, and nothing else. Specifically, Steele does not:

  • Sell Google user data, or transfer it for anyone else to use.
  • Use Google user data for advertising of any kind.
  • Use Google user data for credit decisions, lending, or profiling unrelated to the feature you asked for.
  • Use Google user data to develop, improve, or train Steele as a product.
  • Request Gmail or Drive file-content scopes for the parent MVP.

People at Steele do not read your Google data. The exceptions are the ones Limited Use allows and no others: with your consent, to investigate a security problem or a bug you reported, where the law requires it, or in a form that is aggregated or has your identity stripped out.

Steele is mixed audience, not child directed. Under-13 signup is blocked at account creation.

You can disconnect Google from your dashboard at any time, or revoke Steele's access at myaccount.google.com/permissions. What we do with Google data, and what we never do with it, is in the Privacy Policy.
